Taking the Pain away
TMJ Physiotherapy
The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint on each side of your jaw. Pain in these joints are very common and can be due to a number of different causes.
These include:
Clenching or grinding of the teeth which can cause overactivity of the jaw muscles.
Direct trauma to the jaw or bones around the jaw
Poor postures / neck pain
Wear and tear to the cartilage, arthritic changes, inflammatory diseases.
TMJ disorders can be very painful and disruptive to day to day activities. Pain in the jaw joints and facial muscles can lead to problems with opening and closing your mouth. Clicking, grinding or locking joints leads to difficulty with chewing, talking or yawning.
Headaches, dizziness, neck pain, ear ringing or tinnitus can also be caused by TMJ disorders.
Physiotherapy can help with these symptoms to reduce pain and improve function.
We can work alongside your dentist and/or medical team to help improve the movement of the structures causing pain. This can be achieved with manual therapy to the muscles, tissues and joints in the area, whilst also prescribing specific exercises to help release and strengthen the muscles in the area to improve the biomechanics of the joints.
If you are suffering from a TMJ disorder and would like to book in for an assessment and treatment, please book in with our TMJ specialist physiotherapist, TJ Spurin. TJ works from the Kemptown clinic on a Thursday and Friday.
